Friday Hellbender and Tail of the Dragon Late
Enjoy a spirited half day of driving as we depart from Fontana Village and take NC 28, also known as the Hellbender. The Hellbender has sweeping curves and breathtaking views and will get us warmed up for the Dragon as we follow it to Deal’s Gap.
Once we make our way through the Dragon we’ll follow 129 North and enjoy the scenery as we head to our lunch destination. We can stop for photo opportunities along the way at the Tallassee Recreation Area. We’ll be having lunch at Dragon Pitt Inn & BBQ (http://www.dragonpittinnandbbq.com/). After lunch we will head over to Fort Loudon State Historic Park (http://fortloudoun.com/), which is one of the earliest British fortifications on the Western frontier, built in 1756. The views are incredibly beautiful and admission is free. It’s also educational, and if we’re lucky, we may see some of the re-enactments.
After we leave Fort Loudon we’ll head back through the Dragon and make our way back to Fontana Village Resort.
This drive is approximately 89 miles, is planned for a 4 hour duration (including stops) and departs Friday Morning.
